Antonio makes ‘crazy’ transfer claim that West Ham must do

West Ham star Michail Antonio claims that West Ham must sign a striker this January, despite being a centre-forward himself.

The Jamaican international has been the only recognised centre-forward at the club since Sebastian Haller’s departure to Ajax in January 2020.

The Hammers are looking to qualify for the Champions League this season after a good start to the season that leaves them in fifth, one point behind Arsenal.

Antonio has been a key factor, scoring eight goals and providing five assists but the forward believes the Hammers should be looking to bring in some competition for him.

Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Antonio said: “One thing that we definitely need is a striker, and the crazy thing is I’m the striker, so somebody is going to come in and try to take my spot.

“But I like a challenge, I like having someone there pushing me, even if they take my spot, I believe I can get it back, it gives me that hunger and that drive. It makes me play better because I need to play well to stay in the team,” Antonio said.

“Obviously we have quite a few injuries at the back, we have lost Kurt [Zouma], Angelo [Ogbonna] Cress [Aaron Cresswell] is out with his back so obviously we must be looking at centre-halves as well but if one comes in someone has to go out and that is a difficult thing in professional football, it might be one of your friends who is going out.”

The West Ham man also spoke of his desire to beat his own personal records, something that he looks on course to beat this season.

“I have eight goals and five assists, because of how well I started the season I wanted to be a bit further but I am definitely on target for what I set myself for the season.

“Last year I got ten goals and five assists, so eight goals and five assists I am almost tied with that. This season all I wanted to do was beat that and see how far I can [go] and each year as the seasons go by I just want to keep beating it.”

“The most I have got in the Prem is ten goals and I am two away from that so hopefully I can beat that.”
