Arsenal confirm signing of MLS defender on permanent deal

Arsenal have signed Colorado Rapids defender Auston Trusty, who will remain at the MLS club on loan until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old has made 41 appearances for Colorado and helped the club top the Western Conference in the 2021/22 regular season.

In a club statement, Arsenal revealed that Trusty will not join up with his new team-mates until the end of May at the earliest.

Tottenham won the window, Arsenal nailed it too…

Furthermore, the Gunners ‘intend’ to loan the uncapped American out to a European club in the summer transfer window.

Trusty is Arsenal’s only signing of the January window, despite the London club’s attempts to sign a new central midfielder and striker.

Their transfer business has drawn lots of criticism from fans, especially with the imminent departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona.

The Gunners threw all their eggs in the Dusan Vlahovic basket but were unable to lure the Serbian striker from Fiorentina.

After weeks of rumours and negotiations, Vlahovic joined Juventus and Arsenal did not appear to have any alternative strikers lined up.

A deal for Juve’s central midfielder Arthur also seemed likely. Arsenal wanted to sign the 25-year-old on a six-month loan, with the Serie A club looking for the loan to last 18 months.

Aubameyang’s free transfer to Barcelona leaves the Gunners with two recognised first-team strikers for the rest of the season in Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah.

And former striker Kevin Campbell claims Arsenal are “playing Russian roulette” having not signed a striker in January and have thinned their squad to the point where the bench could look like an “advert for Mothercare”.

Campbell told Sky Sports: “I think Arsenal should have done business. They’ve been linked with Vlahovic, Isak and a whole host of strikers, but they’ve brought nobody in. I think they’re playing a bit of Russian roulette.

“I think Lacazette and Nketiah isn’t strong enough. Lacazette is obviously very experienced and a very good player. Nketiah is not the answer – he’s going to be leaving in the summer.

“There’s holes in the squad, even more holes now as they’ve thinned the squad down tremendously.

“The Arsenal bench could look like an advert for Mothercare with bottles and Farleys Rusks with the amount of youngsters they could have. It’s a very difficult game Arsenal are playing.”
