Premier League side Arsenal are at the front of the queue to sign Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto, according to reports in Spain.
The versatile Spaniard, who can play in midfield and at right-back, is out of contract in the summer and will be able to leave the club as a free agent with a number of clubs reportedly interested.
Reports in Spain have suggested Roberto will not sign a new deal with the Catalan club and will seek pastures new in the summer.
Ten unlikely English European qualifiers and how they fared…
Roberto has spent his whole career at Barcelona, racking up over 300 appearances for the Catalan giants since the 2010/11 season.
The 29-year-old has struggled with injuries this campaign, contributing two goals and an assist in just 11 La Liga appearances this term.
Speaking in January, Mikel Arteta was insistent that Arsenal “have to maximise every window”.
The Spaniard said: “I think with the amount of things and the way that we want to evolve the squad, we have to maximise every window in many different ways and we are alert.
“[Technical director] Edu and his team are working very hard because we know exactly what we need to do, and whether we can accomplish that in January or in the summer, is a different question as it is related to other stuff.”
Roberto has won two Champions Leagues, six La Ligas, six Spanish Cups and five Super Cups during his time at the Camp Nou and now Arsenal could bring him to the Emirates Stadium in the summer.
ARA and RAC1 journalist Xavi Hernandez Navarro (via Fichajes) claims that Roberto is ‘looking for a new team for next season’ after deciding not to renew because of ‘differences between the two parties’.
It is understood that ‘negotiations are broken at the moment and an agreement is far from being reached’ with Barcelona turning their attention to bringing Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta in to replace him.
Roberto would be keen to move to the Premier League and Arsenal are the club ‘that has shown the most interest in him’ while he could end up at Manchester City under his former boss Pep Guardiola.
