Chelsea confirm deal for League One teen Burstow

Chelsea have completed the signing of Charlton teenager Mason Burstow.

The paperwork was completed late on Monday evening and the Blues confirmed the deal for the 18-year-old striker, who will remain with Charlton on loan for the remainder of the season.

Burstow was left out of the Charlton squad for their 2-1 win over Portsmouth on Monday to conclude talks with Chelsea, though the fee has not been revealed.

Charlton boss Johnnie Jackson said: “A bid has come in from a Premier League club for Mason, so we’ve allowed him to go and chat with them. His focus was going to be elsewhere tonight, so we felt it best to leave him out of the game.”

Chelsea were among a number of top-flight clubs monitoring the teenager, but came out on top with a “substantial” offer.

Jackson added: “It’s great that the chairman has got a deal he is happy with, but also we get the player back.”

Burstow has made just seven starts for Charlton this season but has six goals in 14 appearances.

He becomes Chelsea’s second signing of the window after Dylan Williams joined from Derby.

The Blues did not add any new players to their first team squad despite many believing they should bring in a left-sided defender to cover for Ben Chilwell.

There were also rumours of their interest in Ousmane Dembele, which increased on deadline day, but it’s thought any talks between Chelsea, Barcelona and the player were with a view to the summer (or possibly sooner) when he will be available on a free transfer.

The club’s inertia will have left some Chelsea fans frustrated, but The Athletic claim Tuchel ‘didn’t push for new faces’, as his priority aligns with the club hierarchy – they will target a trio of signings this summer.

The report claims ‘their list of targets includes Jules Kounde, Declan Rice and Aurelien Tchouameni’.

As The Athletic explain, the potential cost of one, two, or all three of those summer buys means any players signed in January would have ‘taken vital funds away from the pursuit of that trio, who were not going to be let go by their respective clubs now’.
