Everton are set to make Donny van de Beek their first signing of the Frank Lampard era with an official announcement regarding their new manager expected today, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Van de Beek has started just four Premier League matches since his £40m transfer from Ajax to Manchester United in 2020 and is eager to leave the club as he looks to reignite his career.
Both Crystal Palace and Everton have made approaches but it appears the Toffees have stolen a march on their Premier League rivals, having established an agreement for a loan deal with United.
Six season-defining January loans by Premier League clubs
That’s according to transfer guru Romano, who adds Everton are willing to pay Van de Beek’s full salary until the end of the season.
“Donny van de Beek update,” he wrote on Twitter. “Everton have an agreement in place with Manchester United on straight loan deal, paying 100% salary until June. Decision only up to the player between Crystal Palace and Everton now.
“Van de Beek will pick his next club in the next hours.”
The news comes as Everton prepare to name Lampard as their successor to Rafa Benitez, with Romano revealing later that Sunday morning: “Frank Lampard will sign his contract as new Everton manager today, after verbal agreement in place since Friday.
“He’s already working for new signings – trying to win the race over Crystal Palace for Donny van de Beek on loan from Manchester United.”
Dimitar Berbatov, the former United striker, has encouraged Van de Beek to follow Anthony Martial out of the exit door at Old Trafford. He told Betfair: “Any move that gives Donny van de Beek the opportunity to play is a good move for him.
“It’s not working out for the Dutchman at United and it doesn’t matter who the manager is, he’s constantly on the bench, and not playing enough minutes to get into shape and form.
“It’s best for him to follow Anthony Martial and leave the club to go and play elsewhere.
“He never established himself as a first choice player, which is a shame because he produced great performances for Ajax. He should go on a permanent move and try to get back into the form that he was in before.”
