Ex-Arsenal man Koscielny says he’s been ‘slapped in the face’ by Bordeaux

Former Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny has claimed that him being dropped by Bordeaux “was a slap in the face”.

The Frenchman spent nine years at the Gunners between 2010 and 2019. After Per Mertesacker retired, Koscielny became Arsenal’s captain ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

The defender pushed to leave Arsenal in 2019 and he got his wish as he joined Ligue 1 side Bordeaux.

Koscielny has played 65 times for the French outfit since this move. They are having a disastrous season as they currently sit 17th in Ligue 1.

In response to this, the defender has been dropped from the first team. As quoted by Football London, he said that this has been “very hard” to take:

“I’m a footballer, so my passion is primarily to play, and also to set an example for my teammates as captain.

“So, I took it very hard. Let’s just say it was a right slap in the face. But I’m a fighter, I’ll continue to fight and do what it takes to stay at the top level and help the squad so that the team gets the best possible results.”

Koscielny went onto insist that he has not been given a reason for his exclusion:

“None. They just told me that this was their new strategy. That we would find a solution with the financial director that was good for everyone.”

Elsewhere, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been stripped of the captain’s armband at Arsenal.

Ex-Gunners defender Lauren believes his former club need to sign a new striker this month:

“If Arsenal want to increase their chances of securing a Champions League spot this season – something I believe is very important for the club – then the striker situation needs addressing.

“Either we resolve the situation with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or we bring someone in who can get ten-plus goals between now and the end of the season.

“First of all, I think it’s important to talk with Aubameyang, to try and get him back on board. If the club cannot resolve that issue, then we should be looking at another target in this transfer window, just to be sure that there is enough depth and quality at that end of the pitch.

“The midfield players have been adding goals, but they need another striker to help guarantee that Champions League place.”
