Ferdinand tips Leeds to battle Brentford for Prem survival

Rio Ferdinand believes it will be between his former side Leeds United and Brentford for who will follow Norwich and Watford to the Championship this season.

Leeds were beaten in their first game under new boss Jesse Marsch as Leicester winger Harvey Barnes fired home to give the Foxes the three points.

The Yorkshire club find themselves just two points above the relegation zone following the defeat and Ferdinand has claimed they are in big trouble despite improvements under Marsch.

Speaking on BT Sport (via Leeds Live), Ferdinand said: “I still think it’s a hard slog for them.

“I think it’s going to between them and Brentford. I thought it was Burnley up until ten days ago now I’d say Brentford and Leeds are the two teams in the most danger to follow Norwich and Watford at this present moment in time.”

The former Manchester United man also added some thoughts on Leeds’ decision to sack Marcelo Bielsa.

“I don’t think he was willing to [adapt]. I think Bielsa has built his reputation on a particular way of playing and that’s what he will live and die by.

“I think he’ll be very proud going out the way he did. He said: ‘this is me, you employ me for this way. That’s it and if it doesn’t work then you can make a decision.’”

Elsewhere, former Manchester City winger Trevor Sinclair praised the improvements Marsch has made to Leeds in a short period of time.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Sinclair said: “Leeds defended much better, they look more solid, I’ve been very impressed.

“Luke Ayling playing as a makeshift centre-half has played extremely well, he’s adapted really well, they’ve looked really solid.

“They were lively, they grew into the game. Leicester started brightly, but for the majority of the game the forwards just had no service.

“Leeds played with a freedom in attack and I’ve been impressed, they look like they’ve got more about them already.

“Jesse Marsch has been in the job for four days and there has been massive improvements.”
