‘It’s a great position’ – Hughes expresses interest in Man Utd job

Mark Hughes admits he would be “very interested” in the Manchester United job following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian’s sacking was confirmed on Sunday after United’s 4-1 loss against Watford at Vicarage Road.

Michael Carrick is currently in temporary charge of the Red Devils and will oversee their Champions League tie at Villarreal on Tuesday.

Ten of the biggest mistakes Man Utd made in the Ole era

Hughes – who played for Man Utd during his playing days – has discussed the vacant role, revealing that he has not been approached to replace Solskjaer.

“There’s a lot of people who have my phone number at United and I haven’t had a call yet,” he told talkSPORT (via Manchester Evening News). “So let’s put that one to bed.”

However, when speaking to Sky Sports, Hughes admitted that he would be “very interested” in the job.

“I haven’t had a call yet so I wouldn’t be too excited about it at the moment because I don’t think it’s going to happen, but you never know,” the 58-year-old said.

“It’s a great position, one that a lot of managers would be very interested in, myself included.”

Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino is currently the frontrunner to become the new United manager.

The club’s former centre-back Rio Ferdinand does not believe the Argentine will leave PSG mid-season, however.

“I don’t think that Pochettino leaves PSG during the season,” Ferdinand said on his Vibe with FIVE YouTube channel. “He’s a man of integrity, he’s a man of respect.

“I think he’s grateful for the opportunity to be at PSG and as a man, I think he’ll just say: ‘If they want me that bad they’ll wait’.

“I think from the media that we saw over the last couple of years when he was out of work, that for him Man United is the pinnacle, is the club he’d love to get to, get his hands on and guide the club.

“He’s got a lot of stuff going on at PSG so you have to be respectful in that sense.

“It’s about what PSG want as well because they’re not the kind of club that will just relinquish their manager.

“I’m putting money on Pochettino, for the end of the season, start of next season, my money’s on Pochettino being manager.”
