Jordan: Coutinho ‘great’ for Villa but ‘not the same player that left Liverpool’

Simon Jordan believes Philippe Coutinho is potentially a “great signing” for Aston Villa even if he is “not the same player that left Liverpool”.

Coutinho completed his loan move to Aston Villa on Friday morning. The Villans have an option to sign him permanently in the summer.

The Brazillian is reuniting with Steven Gerrard, who was his teammate at Liverpool.

Five semi-realistic transfers we’d love to see this month

Coutinho spent five years at Liverpool between 2013 and 2018. He was one of the best performers in the Premier League during this time and he won the club’s Player of the Year award twice.

Barcelona paid an initial fee of £105m to sign the midfielder and this could have risen to £142m with add-ons. This move did not go to plan as he was sent on loan to Bayern Munich in 2019/20.

Jordan believes “the Gerrard factor” pushed through Coutinho’s move to Villa:

“On paper, it looks a wonderful signing. It’s a player that’s played 99 games over the last four or five years, so it’s not the same player that left Liverpool that really set the heather on fire,” Jordan said (as quoted by the Liverpool Echo).

“It’s also a clever move from Villa because there’s no transfer fee involved. I would hasten to add there’s probably at best 50% of wages being covered.

“So in Premier League terms, whilst it’s got real stardust over it, it looks like a great piece of business.

“It’s a £4m outlay and the reason why he’s gone to Villa is primarily that he’s got the connection with Gerrard.

“It looks like the Gerrard factor is having some resonance and for £4m for Aston Villa it’s a non-decision in Premier League terms.”

Jordan went onto suggest that Coutinho could be the man to replace Jack Grealish:

“If he is 75 per cent of what he was when he was at Liverpool, it’s a great signing,” Jordan added.

“If he’s less than that then you’re moving into the territory of, ‘it looks good on paper but will it become a productive outcome?’

“But I think in terms of replacing a Jack Grealish sort-of creative, quality on the ball figure, I think Villa fans will be very excited by it.”
