La Liga centre-back still on Tottenham ‘list’ but January move unlikely

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Villarreal defender Pau Torres is still on Tottenham Hotspur’s “list” but a January move is unlikely.

The Spaniard reportedly rejected a move to Spurs during the summer. He was also linked with Manchester United before they signed Raphael Varane.

Torres came through the ranks at Villarreal and he has played 112 games for them since 2016.

The 24-year-old has been capped 16 times by Spain and he has made 25 outings for Villarreal so far this term.

The defender played the full 90 minutes in both of Villarreal’s games against Man Utd in the Champions League group stages.

Respected journalist Romano has revealed that Spurs want to sign a new centre-back this month. He also reported that Torres is still admired by the English side:

“Let’s see what happens with a centre-back,” Romano told his ‘Here We Go podcast’.

“Tottenham want to sign a new centre-back in January. Pau Torres has always been on their list since last summer, but Villarreal have no intention to let him leave in January.”

Elsewhere, Antonio Conte is aware that Tottenham “have to solve many problems”:

“I spoke with the club. I have my thoughts on the situation. The club has to decide the best way to go,” Conte told reporters (as quoted by BBC Sport).

“I don’t have expectations. I am the coach and know that we have to solve many problems.

“For me, in this moment, the best possible way is to try to get the best out of my players. This is the only way I can to try to improve the situation and the squad.”

“We have spoken about the situation, it was a good meeting. The owner and [Fabio] Paratici, they started together at the start of this season and I arrived in the middle of the season. For sure they know the situation much better than me.

“It was a good meeting to speak and to tell them my thoughts about the two months I have spent at Tottenham. I can give a lot of work to the club. Then the decision’s for the club and not for me. The last word is always for the club.”
