Man Utd have ‘strong interest’ in PL right-back as Rangnick eyes ‘upgrade’

Man Utd have “strong interest” in Brighton right-back Tariq Lamptey as Ralf Rangnick is eyeing an “upgrade on his existing options”.

The 21-year-old came through the ranks at Chelsea but he has been with Brighton since 2020.

His time at the Seagulls has been disrupted by injury but he has still been one of their standout players over the past couple of years.

Man Utd faring well – above Chelsea – in European form table…

Ninth-placed Brighton have impressed this term and Lamptey has been in good form as he has played twelve times in the league.

Rangnick stepped in as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s replacement in December. He has started both Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot at right-back in recent weeks.

The Daily Mail are reporting that the interim boss wants an “upgrade” on Wan-Bissaka and Dalot.

They add that Man Utd have “strong interest” in Brighton’s Lamptey. It is said that United value him at around £30m. But Brighton look set to demand around £40m for their defender.

Elsewhere, Alan Shearer has backed Tottenham to finish fourth in the Premier League. The Newcastle legend did not mention Man Utd as he talked through the Champions League contenders:

“Before a ball was kicked I did say Chelsea [to win the league] – I’m having severe doubts now.

“The run that Man City have been on, they’ve just been relentless and Pep [Guardiola] is just incredible, the way he keeps drilling out results and getting the best out of all of those players that he’s got.

“It’s difficult with so many good players because every good player wants to play every week. How he handles that is hugely important.

“So I’ll probably have to say Man City [will win] I don’t think anyone will beat them now.

“Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea… I’ve been really impressed with Arteta and Arsenal and how he’s handled things, but [Antonio] Conte going into Spurs and with Harry Kane and Son [Heung-min] up front, I think I might say Spurs into fourth position.”

Man Utd are currently seventh in the Premier League. As things stand, if they win their game in hand they will move level on points with West Ham, who are currently fifth in the table.

The Red Devils are back in action this weekend. They travel to face Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa in the league.
