Man Utd only club ‘maintaining interest’ in star demanding €15m

According to reports, Man Utd are the only club ‘maintaining interest’ in Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele amid his huge financial demands.

The Spanish giants paid €105m plus add-ons to sign the winger from Borussia Dortmund in 2017.

Dembele has been troubled by injuries over the past couple of years as he has only played 90 times in La Liga.

He is out of contract this summer and Barcelona were keen for him to leave during the January transfer window.

Speaking last month, Barcelona president Joan Laporta revealed that Dembele rejected “two good offers” in January to remain at the club.

Laporta – who set an asking price of £18million – admitted he was “surprised” that the 24-year-old opted not to leave:

“We had made a good offer for him to renew his contract and stay. But it became a financial issue and he wanted more,” Laporta said.

“We showed him two good offers (at the transfer deadline) for him to play with another club during these last six months, the last one from an English club, and he didn’t accept them and preferred to stay here.

“We’re surprised. It’s hard to understand.”

Man Utd have been heavily linked with the Frenchman over the past few months.

Dembele has returned to the fold for Barcelona of late. He provided a goal and two assists as they beat Athletic Bilbao 4-0 last weekend.

Spanish outlet Sport (via Sport Witness) are reporting that Man Utd are now the only club ‘maintaining interest’ in Dembele.

It is stated that it ‘remains to be seen’ whether the Red Devils will ‘accept all the financial demands’ to sign Dembele this summer.

They add that the player is demanding as much as €15m in signing on bonuses.

Kevin Campbell recently suggested that Arsenal have “dodged a bullet” with Dembele as he is “just as frustrating as he is brilliant”:

“Arsenal dodged a bullet there. I don’t think they need Dembele. On his day he can be devastating but his injury record is worrying. I have watched him a lot in Spain. While he is a brilliant player, he can be just as frustrating.

“We have already got a similar player in Pepe. He can be devastating on his day but can equally be frustrating. We need players who are consistent.

“The Dembele move didn’t work out but in all honesty, I think it was for the best.”
