Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has named which of his former club’s current stars could get in Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City’s side.
United travel to City on Sunday in the Manchester derby and the gap between the two sides in the Premier League table could grow up to 22 points should Pep Guardiola’s side triumph.
Big Weekend: Manchester derby, Dele, Marsch, Brentford
The gap between the two clubs in terms of recent success has been increasing every season with City dominating domestically and United struggling to find the right structure, both on, and off the pitch.
The rivals have both invested heavily in their squads in recent years, with varying levels of success and United legend Neville has admitted he can only think of one player from the red half of Manchester who could have a chance of getting in City’s side.
Speaking to LADBible TV (via Manchester Evening News), Neville named Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes as one who could get in City’s side, but admitted even he would struggle.
“I can be really honest about it, I’ll go through them.
“[Ruben] Dias, [Aymeric] Laporte, [Joao] Cancelo and [Kyle] Walker — they’re better than all of United’s back four. Fernandinho and Rodri, they’re better than United’s holding midfield players. Bernardo Silva, [Ilkay] Gundogan…
“Bruno is the only one that I think, over the last 12 to 18 months, could… but [Kevin] De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, [Riyad] Mahrez, [Phil] Foden and [Raheem] Sterling.
“I can’t put Bruno in ahead of Bernardo Silva at the moment, or De Bruyne. It’s a sad indictment really.”
Elsewhere, another former United defender and an ex-teammate of Neville, Mikael Silvestre, has hit back at the criticism aimed at Cristiano Ronaldo.
“It’s normal [that he gets criticism] because, with the name he carries, the expectation must be high, so it’s normal that he’ll get some stick,” Silvestre said (via The Mirror).
“The statistics this season are in his favour, especially with the team’s current form.
“It’s been a positive signing, even with the run of games where he hasn’t been scoring, but it happens. He’s Ronaldo… he’s not God!”
