Newcastle ‘considering loan with £15m buy obligation’ for Liverpool man

Newcastle United are ‘considering’ a loan deal for Liverpool defender Nat Phillips, according to reports.

The centre-back had a spell as an academy player for Bolton but he has been with Liverpool since 2016.

Before he made his senior debut for the Reds, he had a spell on loan in Germany with Stuttgart in 2019/20.

Does the Premier League title race have a pulse?

Liverpool had a lot of injuries last season as Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez were out for several months.

Phillips was afforded more opportunities as he played 20 times in 2020/21. He has only featured in three games so far this term though.

They reportedly rejected an offer for Phillips from Watford earlier this month.

The Liverpool Echo are reporting that Newcastle are ‘considering’ a loan move for Phillips before the winter window shuts.

This deal would include an ‘obligation to buy’ in the summer if the Magpies stay up. Liverpool’s asking price for Phillips is still £15m.

Elsewhere, Jamie Carragher has picked Kevin De Bruyne as the player he would bring to Liverpool if he could:

“Kevin De Bruyne. I think he’s one of the best players in the world – certainly, in the last two or three years, he’s been the best midfield player in the world,” Carragher said (via The Daily Star).

“People always say Liverpool lack creativity in midfield. I think it’s a bit harsh because I think Liverpool get their creativity from different areas, it’s just the way the team’s set up.

“That midfield three, whoever it is, does a lot of work for the front three and for the full-backs. So, they’ve got a job to do and they do it really well.

“I just think that Kevin De Bruyne is absolutely sensational. I think in that right channel, maybe getting in the way of Trent I don’t know! But I’d say Kevin De Bruyne is the first one that springs to mind.”

Man City are currently nine points clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp’s side do have a game in hand over their rivals, though.

The sides drew 2-2 when they met at Anfield in October. They face off at the Etihad on April 9 in the return game in the Premier League.
