Newcastle United have opened talks with Monaco over the signing of central defender Benoit Badiashile, according to reports.
The Magpies have been linked with numerous defensive players in recent weeks and have already completed the signing of right-back Kieran Tripper from Atletico Madrid.
Their top centre-back target was Lille’s Sven Botman but Newcastle pulled out of negotiations due to the Ligue 1 club’s asking price.
The Geordies have also been linked with Feyenoord’s Marcos Senesi and Sevilla defender Diego Carlos this week.
However, Sky Sports claim the north east club are ‘in talks’ to sign Monaco’s young central defender Badiashile.
The 20-year-old has made 20 appearances this season and has previously been linked with Manchester United.
He picked up an injury against Nantes on Sunday with his return date unclear. If it is a long-term problem it is unlikely that Newcastle will sign the player this month.
The report adds that Badiashile ‘wants to make the move to St James’ Park’.
Another Ligue 1 player keen on a move to Newcastle is Stade Reims teenager Hugo Ekitike. Sky Sports claim the Magpies are willing to offer the young striker a five-year contract.
They add that ‘both parties are willing to come to an agreement’ with Reims keen on keeping Ekitike on loan until the end of the season. The 19-year-old is likely to cost Newcastle at least £25million.
He told talkSPORT: “You can go back as far as you want to: they are a shadow of what they were before.
“When I was growing up, Man United was the biggest team. Everybody would say, ‘Man United, they win trophies’ – United have got no chance of winning the Premier League in years and years!
“They have got no chance, let’s be honest, of winning the Premier League for nearly ten years.”
