Newcastle have reached out to Atalanta defender Robin Gosens and have liked the players response, according to reports.
The Magpies are looking to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window. They have already brought in England international Kieran Trippier as well as forward Chris Wood from relegation rivals Burnley.
There have been numerous reports linking them with various central defenders including Lille defender Sven Botman and Sevilla man Diego Carlos.
Left-back is also an area that Eddie Howe is reportedly looking to improve. There was interest in Everton defender Lucas Digne, but the French full-back decided to join Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa instead.
However, now the north-East club are moving onto a new target.
As reported by 90min, Newcastle have reached put to the agent of Atalanta defender Gosens and have ‘liked the response’ from the Germany international.
It continues by adding that Gosens would consider a move to Newcastle, with the mega-rich Magpies offering up a huge wage rise for the defender.
However, convincing the Serie A side to sell would be difficult as they currently sit fourth in the leaguer as they look to secure Champions League football.
They don’t want to part with an important player mid-way through the campaign but if Gosens is keen on a move, Newcastle do have the financial power to make a tempting offer for the defender.
“If they believe it’s the reason why then maybe, maybe,” he said. “Sometimes it’s the money that we have, sometimes it’s Covid. I don’t know. What can I say?
“But the pandemic is all around the world and everywhere there is the virus. We are exposed every single minute and day to getting it.
“We have had a lot of cases and injuries. We played Aston Villa with 11 players in the first team.
“For the last six or seven games we’ve had four or five Academy players on the bench. We are in the same situation as all other clubs.
“It’s not like we are not wiser than others, or because we do the protocols better than the other ones, the virus comes to the bubble and everyone suffers, so we are no exception.
“Today we are OK but in a few hours we might have four or five positives. That is why we have to adapt, adjust, and work out what we have to do.”
