Newcastle United have been backed to blow the likes of Man Utd and Tottenham “out of the water” in the race to sign Christian Eriksen.
The former Tottenham player suffered a cardiac arrest at last summer’s European Championships.
He had an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) fitted which enabled him to carry on playing football.
Leicester cornered once again in defeat at Newcastle
The midfielder returned to the Premier League in January as he signed for Brentford. He has hit the ground running for the Bees.
Eriksen also scored twice as he played for Denmark during the international break last month.
His contract at Brentford expires this summer and he has been linked with Man Utd and Tottenham.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke has told GiveMeSport that he expects Newcastle to “throw their hat into the ring” for Eriksen this summer:
“If Christian Eriksen becomes available on a free transfer, I’m sure Newcastle will throw their hat into the ring to try and get him.
“If it comes down to finances, they might be able to blow their rivals out of the water in offering terms to him.
“For me, I think if Christian Eriksen is available on a free transfer, he’s probably the most likely out of those three.”
Newcastle fought back from behind to beat Leicester City 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. Bruno Guimaraes netted a brace and he was praised post-match by Eddie Howe:
“To score so late in the game is a massive lift for everybody.
“I thought we had the best chances. Leicester were probably in control of the game but we had some really good moments and I thought our defensive resilience in the second half, as Leicester took control of the ball, was excellent.
“We hung in there, made it difficult for them to penetrate us, and got rewarded for that with the counter-attack goal at the end.”
On Bruno, the Newcastle boss added: “Yes, they love him and rightly so after today’s performance. He was magnificent in every discipline of the game.
“I think the biggest compliment I could give him is that on 95 minutes, with tired legs, for sure, for him – he’s getting used to the Premier League – but he’s managed to get himself in the box to score that header.”
