Rangnick told to give Man Utd star ‘a week off’ amid poor form

Danny Mills thinks Ralf Rangnick should give Marcus Rashford a week off to get refreshed and come back firing for Man Utd.

The England international came back from shoulder surgery in fantastic form with three goals in his first four matches back in October.

However, since bagging on the road at Tottenham, Rashford has failed to score in his next 11 matches and has contributed just one assist in that time.

The transfer record progression of every Premier League club

The Man Utd forward was taken off in their 1-0 victory over Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round on Monday night and some met his substitution with sarcastic cheers.

And Mills reckons Man Utd interim boss Rangnick needs to make the decision to send Rashford away for some “sunshine” in Dubai or elsewhere in an attempt to recapture the forward’s form.

“Sometimes you can try too hard,” Mills told Football Insider. “I remember listening to Clive Allen talk about strikers and he said to stop practising because you can practice bad habits.

“Sometimes you need a bit of a mental reset or a change, a weekend. Go and give him a week off so he can get some sunshine. That’s down to man-management.

“Let him know that he’s loved then just say ‘Do yourself favour, go to Dubai or somewhere for a long weekend and get some sun’. I don’t think the off-field stuff has anything to do with it.

“He’s never really kicked on become the player we expected him to be. It’s always been a few games and then he tails off again. He’s never kicked onto that real top-class level of consistency.

“Man United are not playing well at the moment and he’s finding it hard.”

When asked why the academy graduate was underperforming after the match against Villa, Man Utd interim manager Rangnick said: “Actually I don’t know.

“I think he’s trying hard. In training he was doing well in the last couple of days, that’s why he was quite rightly in the starting XI.

“I think in the first half we found him quite often, but we also tried to get him into the box.

“In the second half that was not that often the case and that’s why at the end of the game I decided to make two changes with Anthony Elanga and Jesse Lingard.

“It was very important to progress into the next round. Yes (confidence is important) especially for strikers – it’s important that they score goals on and off, that there are moments of success.

“Of course it would be good, for example, for Marcus if he could score a goal but as long as he’s trying, as long as he’s training well I don’t see that much of a problem.”
