Rio makes surprise suggestion for Man Utd job after Poch doubts

Rio Ferdinand has doubts that Mauricio Pochettino would take the Man Utd job during the season because “he’s a man of integrity”.

There are reports that Pochettino is unhappy at Paris Saint-Germain with the Independent insisting ‘his backroom team that hasn’t been remotely replicated in France’ with current circumstances understood to be ‘far from ideal’.

The former Tottenham boss has been linked with Man Utd on numerous occasions and he is now favourite to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the Norwegian was sacked on Sunday.

Former Man Utd defender Ferdinand reckons the job at Old Trafford is seen as the “pinnacle” by Pochettino but that the Argentine would be reluctant to leave PSG in the middle of the campaign.

“I don’t think that Pochettino leaves PSG during the season,” Ferdinand said on his Vibe with FIVE YouTube channel. “He’s a man of integrity, he’s a man of respect.

“I think he’s grateful for the opportunity to be at PSG and as a man, I think he’ll just say: ‘If they want me that bad they’ll wait’.

“I think from the media that we saw over the last couple of years when he was out of work, that for him Man United is the pinnacle, is the club he’d love to get to, get his hands on and guide the club.

“He’s got a lot of stuff going on at PSG so you have to be respectful in that sense.

“It’s about what PSG want as well because they’re not the kind of club that will just relinquish their manager.

“I’m putting money on Pochettino, for the end of the season, start of next season, my money’s on Pochettino being manager.”

Michael Carrick has been appointed in a caretaker role while the Man Utd board attempt to identify the right manager to interim until the end of the season.

Numerous names have been linked – including former Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce – but Ferdinand thinks former Man Utd assistant manager Carlos Quieroz would do a good job.

“What about Carlos Quieroz?” Ferdinand asked. “’I think if Man United come calling for someone like Carlos Quieroz he drops whatever he’s doing.”
