Smith confirms Norwich striker Idah will miss rest of season

Norwich City head coach Dean Smith has confirmed that Adam Idah is likely to miss the rest of the season following knee surgery.

Idah, 21, picked up a knee and ankle problem during the Premier League draw against Crystal Palace and, following initial tests, it was determined an operation was needed.

Idah has scored one goal in 21 appearances in all competitions for the Canaries this season.

“We have had some bad news about Adam,” said Smith, who takes his relegation-battlers to Liverpool on Saturday.

“He went in for an arthroscopy and then for a meniscus (cartilage) repair, he should be out for the season now.

“It was in the (Palace) game when he did it. He planted his foot, hurt his ankle and knee, but played on. It is a real blow and disappointing, but it gives other players an opportunity now.”

With Idah out, Smith insists it is now an opportunity for Josh Sargent, amongst others, to make the striker spot their own.

“Josh came here as a striker,” he continued. “He can make it stick or run in behind. There’s an opportunity now for him and for others.”

Smith also revealed that his team played a training fixture against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

The Norwich boss says the friendly has helped the likes of Mathias Normann and Ozan Kabak get up to speed.

“I was mindful of the fact a lot of players needed minutes. It was good in the sense that Ozan played 90 minutes and is now back available.

“Mathias had 60 minutes in the practice game in the week, he’s nearing a start which is really good for us.

On other players on the treatment table, Smith said: “Tim Krul is progressing well. He’s doing some ball work and is due to have another injection today.

“Lukas Rupp is back in rehabilitation as well so it’s looking good with those two.

“Andrew Omobamidele had some time off. He hasn’t managed to deal with the training load so far so we will go back to see a consultant on his back problem.”
