Tottenham player is ‘not top-four defender’ but is still ‘huge miss’

Paul Robinson has suggested that Eric Dier has been a “huge miss” for Tottenham Hotspur but he is “not a top four defender”.

The England international has played over 300 times for Spurs since his move to the Premier League from Sporting Lisbon.

His form has declined in recent years as he has not played for England since 2020.

Despite this, Dier has been relied upon this term as he has played 23 times across all competitions.

The 28-year-old has missed recent games as he has a thigh injury. He was not involved as Spurs were beaten by Southampton and Wolves.

Robinson does not think Tottenham have been able to replace Jan Vertonghen or Toby Alderweireld:

“Eric Dier is a huge miss, which I never thought I’d say,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“Let’s be honest, Spurs have never really replaced Vertonghen and Alderweireld.

“The fact they are missing Dier shows how poor the rest of the defence has been.

“Dier is not a top-four defender. He is not a world-class centre-half in truth. That is where Spurs want to be and that is where they need to get to.

“They’re missing leaders badly and that is something that Dier does bring.

“There are no leaders in the centre of the pitch. Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris are leaders but I’m not sure that they’re very vocal on the field.

“Dier is vocal though. He can man manage games on the pitch.”

Arsenal and Tottenham have reportedly joined the race to sign Croatian left-back Borna Sosa.

Chelsea are said to have held talks with the £25m-rated Stuttgart star in January, before the German side blocked the move.

Thomas Tuchel was keen on signing the 24-year-old as cover for Ben Chilwell, who looks to be out for the rest of the season, but Stuttgart didn’t want Sosa to leave mid-season.

And now, BILD’s Christian Falk claims Arsenal and Spurs are set to do battle for the Croatia international.

Sosa – who can play either at left-back or left wing-back – has one goal and four assists in 18 appearances for Stuttgart this term.
