West Ham ‘failed’ in a late move to sign Newcastle United-linked Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata, according to reports.
The Hammers did not make a single signing in the January transfer window despite reported interest in numerous players.
David Moyes was keen to bring Jesse Lingard in on loan from Manchester United but the England midfielder will see out his contract at Old Trafford.
West Ham need to go full steam ahead for Europa League
The London club were also linked with Marseille centre-half Duje Caleta-Car as well as Leeds United duo Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha.
In terms of strikers, West Ham had a bid rejected by Benfica for Darwin Nunez, as per the Evening Standard.
The same source also reported that the Irons ‘failed’ in their late attempt to bring in Atalanta’s Zapata.
They say that late contact was made on deadline day but ‘there was not enough time’ to secure the signing of the 30-year-old.
Zapata joined Atalanta in 2020 from Sampdoria and has also enjoyed spells in Serie A with Udinese and Napoli.
He has scored 78 times in his 152 appearances for Atalanta and also has 34 caps for Colombia, netting four times for his country.
Elsewhere, Dusan Vlahovic says he snubbed Arsenal to join Juventus as he has “similar DNA” to the Turin club.
Arsenal had chased Vlahovic for the best part of a year and ramped up their bid to sign the Fiorentina star as they sought a replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
But the Serbia international and his representatives reportedly refused to even hold talks with the Gunners and the 22-year-old instead moved to Serie A giants Juventus for €80m.
“I am thrilled and proud to have signed with Juventus. A glorious club. I am ready to give my best for the team and obtain great results. I want to thank Juventus President and all the people that brought me here,” Vlahovic said during his unveiling press conference.
“There were many rumours about foreign clubs, but the choice was easy because the club and I have a similar DNA. Fight and suffer when needed. I think it’s part of my mentality as well, so the choice was not difficult.”
