‘Amazing’ – Pundit calls for Man Utd to replace Solskjaer with PL boss

Noel Whelan has suggested that if Man Utd replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers, it would be an “amazing appointment”.

The former Liverpool boss took over at Leicester in 2019. He has led them to two fifth-place finishes in the Premier League from his two full campaigns in charge.

Earlier this year, Rodgers helped the Foxes win their first FA Cup as they beat Chelsea 1-0 in the final at Wembley.

PL clubs ranked on how many days since their last major trophy…

Solskjaer is under pressure at the moment as Man Utd sit fifth in the Premier League after ten games. They face their local rivals Man City on Saturday at Old Trafford.

Last time out, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stoppage-time equaliser to salvage his side a point against Atalanta in the Champions League group stages.

Whelan has told Football Insider that Rodgers has been the “best” manager in the league for a while:

“There’s no doubt in my mind that would be an amazing appointment.

“He’s been the best Premier League manager around for some time.

“I know he’s turned down other jobs because of the situation he’s got at Leicester. He’s got a great squad of players there, and he’s built a real winning mentality at that club.

“They’ve got a great balance at Leicester, very attractive to watch, successful side. Who would not want Brendan Rodgers at Man United?

“In my opinion, he’s up there with the likes of Conte. The job he’s done at Leicester has been ridiculously good.

“He’s won Leicester the FA Cup and cemented their status as top-four challengers.

“You’d normally say they have no right to be at that level, but Rodgers has made that possible.”

Last week, ex-Liverpool man Steve Nicol suggested that Rodgers did not have the right character to manage Man Utd:

“To manage one of the biggest clubs in the world in Manchester United you need to have some sort of strength, some strong characteristic whether other people like you or not.

“The Mourinho’s and even Van Gaal’s, somebody you’d listen to, you don’t listen to Ole and nobody listens to Brendan Rodgers either.

“Brendan Rodgers doesn’t have the character to be the leader at Manchester United.”

He continued: “You are going for the same thing as the guy you are getting rid of.

“Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool had a worse record than Ole [at Manchester United]. Under Rodgers, they were seventh or sixth, second and then sixth.

“Ole has got United into the Champions League two out of three years, Brendan got Liverpool into the Champions League once in three years.

“We have sat here and criticised Ole from the minute he walked into the door because he loses big games, loses finals, he can’t win any trophies but how many trophies did Brendan win at Liverpool in three years? Zero.”
