Aston Villa launch £20.7m ‘official bid’ for Juventus midfielder

Premier League side Aston Villa have made bid for Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Villa have already signed Philippe Coutinho and Robin Olsen on loans until the end of the season, while Lucas Digne has signed permanently from Everton and Calum Chambers has joined from Arsenal.

The Villans board are really showing faith in Steven Gerrard who now has a wealth of talent at his disposal with the club not done there this window.

Are Villa the kings of the surprise transfer? And other Mails…

Romano has confirmed on Twitter that Serie A side Juventus ‘have received’ an ‘official bid’ from Aston Villa for Bentancur – who has been restricted to 13 Serie A starts this season – with the offer currently standing at €25m (£20.7m).

It is understood that the fee will be divided up into €20m up front plus €5m add ons but Romano adds that it is ‘not enough to accept yet’ as ‘Juve will pay 30% of future sale to Boca Juniors’.

The Italian giants are said to be ‘monitoring’ Denis Zakaria and Nahitan Nandez ‘in case’ they sell Bentancur before Monday evening.

Meanwhile, Chambers is delighted to have signed for Aston Villa after completing his move from Arsenal yesterday.

The 27-year-old, who can play in both central defence and at right-back, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at Villa Park.

“It’s a massive club and they’re in a great moment at this moment in time,” Chambers said on the club website.

“It’s a very exciting place to be and everyone can see that from the outside. Things are happening here and it’s definitely moving in the right direction.

“For me, it was a no-brainer to join a great club. It was the right thing for me to do.”

Villa have moved up to 11th in the Premier League table since the arrival of Gerrard, who has won five of his 11 games in charge.

“The manager did very well at Rangers,” Chambers added. “He’s a young, exciting manager and I can’t wait to work with him.

“It’s a great stage to be joining the club at. The club’s building momentum and it’s an exciting time to be here.”
