Atletico Madrid target Wolves man as Trippier replacement

Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Wolves right-back Nelson Semedo as a replacement for Kieran Trippier, according to reports.

Trippier is closing in on a move to Newcastle United. He will join the Premier League strugglers for £12million plus add ons.

He helped Atletico lift the La Liga title last term, also playing five matches for England at Euro 2020 as they reached the final of the competition.

With Trippier leaving, the Colchoneros will be on the search for a replacement, and Wolves’ Semedo has emerged as a surprise target, according to Spanish outlet Marca (via Birmingham Mail).

Semedo has been a regular starter for the Molineux club since joining from Barcelona for around £30m in 2020. He has made over 50 appearances for the Premier League side.

His contract expires in 18 months, but Wolves have the option to extend his deal until 2025, as per Transfermarkt.

A much improved player who’s gone under the radar is Nelson Semedo. Defensively solid, provides nice overlaps and link up play going forwards, he’s been one of the most reliable full backs in the Prem this season imo.

As well as Semedo, Atletico boss Diego Simeone is keen on Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta, according to AS.

The Spaniard’s future is in doubt as his current deal is set to expire in the summer. Thiago Silva penned an extension on Monday, but Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are also out of contract in June.

Azpilicueta joined the Blues in 2012 from Ligue 1 outfit Marseille. He has been an ever-present for the English side over the past ten seasons.

The AS report adds that the Chelsea star is “already being considered” by Atletico Madrid. They are willing to pay a fee for him this month.

Elsewhere, Malang Sarr has been given the ‘green light’ to leave Chelsea on loan in the January transfer window.

This is according to AS Roma Live, who claim AC Milan, Inter Milan and Roma are eyeing up a move for the 22-year-old.

Roma general manager Tiago Pinto is ‘remaining vigilant’ for any ‘cheap options’ in the transfer market, the report adds.

Sarr has only featured five times for the west Londoners this season with three of his appearances coming in the Carabao Cup.
