Azpilicueta ‘very fortunate’ to win it all with Chelsea – Warnock

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta is “very fortunate” to have won it all with Chelsea as he isn’t a great defender, according to Neil Warnock.

Azpilicueta led Chelsea to a 2-1 victory over Palmeiras in the Club World Cup on Saturday.

The win means the Spaniard has now claimed every major honour available to him in his time with the Blues, having already won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League and Europa League.

But that’s not good enough for Warnock, who believes Azpilicueta was simply at the right club at the right time…

“I think Azpilicueta has been a very fortunate lad to be a at a club like #CFC.”

“I don’t think he’s a great defender! Sometimes you need a bit of luck.”

Warnock told talkSPORT: “I think it goes two ways to be honest. I think Azpilicueta has been a very fortunate lad to be a at a club like Chelsea. I don’t think he is a great defender.

“Sometimes in football you need a bit of luck and I think he’s had a bit of luck at the right time and in the right place. That’s what you need in football, you need a bit of luck to be successful.”

Warnock has also had his say on Manchester United’s search for a new manager.

The former Prem boss believes Brendan Rodgers would be a good fit at Old Trafford.

“I think it’s a massive job. If I was Pochettino, I wouldn’t think about coming to Man Utd,” Warnock said.

“The only person I can think of now, which I never thought about, is Brendan Rodgers. I think he’d possibly be a good move.

“I think Brendan is realising how difficult it is at Leicester and I think it might be a good time to change over.

“I think Brendan does deal with these stars.

“I don’t see Pochettino wanting to come back (to England) because there’s a heck of a lot of work. You talk about them (United) and Spurs, they both need three or four players.

“I can’t see Daniel Levy giving him the money to bring the players in that he needs.

“They need world class players and they’re not going to get them for 30-40 million quid.”
