Burnley make enquiry for £12m-rated Crystal Palace striker

According to reports, Burnley have made an enquiry for Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke as they search for a replacement for Chris Wood.

The Clarets lost striker Wood to relegation rivals Newcastle after the Magpies triggered a £25million release clause in the player’s contract.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for me and I’m delighted to be a Newcastle United player,” he told the club’s official website.

“I have played at St. James’ Park a few times and it’s an amazing place, so to have the chance to represent this club with those incredible supporters behind me and my teammates is very special.

“The club and manager have been first class during this process, and I really can’t wait to get onto the pitch and repay the faith they have in me, especially with a vital part of the season ahead of us.”

Wood did not have an ideal debut in black and white as the Geordies drew 1-1 at home to Watford on Saturday.

As for Burnley, their Premier League match against Leicester was postponed due to the Clarets having an insufficient number of players to fulfil the fixture.

They will likely prioritise signing a new striker in the January transfer window. The Daily Mail claim that Burnley have ‘enquired’ about Crystal Palace’s Benteke.

Palace are ‘open to selling’ the Belgian and reportedly want between £10m and £12m for him.

Benteke has been a regular under Patrick Vieira this term, scoring four goals in 20 Premier League appearances.

Elsewhere, Everton have announced their decision to sack Rafa Benitez following a poor run of results.

A 2-1 defeat against lowly Norwich City on Saturday means the Toffees have now lost nine of their last 13 Premier League matches.

And Everton announced their decision to fire former Liverpool manager Benitez with a statement on their website.

The short statement read: “Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as First Team manager.

“Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the Club with immediate effect. An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course.”
