Chelsea-linked £77m man declines ‘important offers’ to stay at Barca

According to reports, Frenkie De Jong has decided to stay at Barcelona amidst rumoured interest from Chelsea.

The 24-year-old joined the Catalan club for a rumoured £77million in July 2019.

He has made 120 appearances for Barcelona and is also a mainstay in the Netherlands national team starting XI.

Is this the most ‘shocking’ Man United manager candidate yet?

De Jong is under contract until 2026, however, amid the club’s financial concerns, has been linked with a move away from the Nou Camp.

Last December, Arsenal were urged to sign the midfielder by their former player Kevin Campbell.

“I would like De Jong, if you don’t mind. I would love to see him at Arsenal,” Campbell said.

“I cannot see them moving him on because he has been phenomenal for them, he really has.

“He is the one player who really fit into Mikel Arteta’s squad. He would fit in effortlessly. I think he’d be brilliant beside Thomas Partey.”

De Jong has been heavily linked with Chelsea, with a report last month claiming that Roman Abramovich wanted to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

Despite having several ‘important offers’, the 24-year-old has ‘decided’ to stay at Barcelona, according to SPORT (via Barca Universal).

The midfielder ‘won’t listen to anyone’ in the summer transfer market and is determined to succeed at the Nou Camp.

Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel has arrived in Abu Dhabi to hand Chelsea a major boost ahead of Saturday’s Club World Cup final against Palmeiras.

The Blues’ German coach had been forced to miss their early Club World Cup endeavours after testing positive for Covid-19 and going into self-isolation.

The 48-year-old watched Wednesday’s 1-0 semi-final win over Al Hilal on television at home in London, but has now made it to the United Arab Emirates in time for Saturday’s final.

Chelsea’s taskmaster boss Tuchel is always an influential touchline presence and his arrival will doubtless hand the Blues a big lift.
