One of the greatest tricks FSG have played on the Liverpool fanbase and apparently Dave LFC over the past few years was convincing them that we have no money.
Every time I took my seat at Anfield in the early part of the season I would remain silent and cringe whenever people sang “the reds have got no money, we’re still going to win the league.”
A quick Google tells me that Liverpool are currently the 5th highest earning football the in the world.
You can make all of your (flimsy) arguments about whether we should meet Salah’s wage demands, or draw extremely speculative and misguided parallels with Barcelona despite LFC not investing in our squad for 2 years, sure. But we categorically *can* afford to pay Salah’s wages.
We have a lot of spots that will need fresh blood over the next couple of years. If you’re content to kid yourself and cover for FSGs recent short comings in the transfer market that’s fine, but don’t be expecting to win things without investment in the squad, and especially don’t expect to win things when Salah and Klopp are gone.
I suspect you’ll value Salah properly in hindsight.

Welcome to the challenge that 99% of other football clubs who can’t compete with the imbalance in football finances for one reason or another (mainly Premier League and Champions League financial doping) face and why they are therefore unable to stop their best players moving on to clubs who can pay more wages.

We have been reading a lot recently about the sorry state of Barca and Real, but this came to a head re Dave LFC stating how Liverpool can’t afford Salah.
Madrid are apparently signing unknown prospects for peanuts? Yet Camavinga was wanted by most of Europe and Vinicious was signed for €45,000,000 about a month after his debut.
Barca have some incredible youngsters that any club would snap up (Gavi, Nico and Puig to a lesser extent) whilst rumours suggest Dubai may be bailing them out? Add in that they’ve signed Torres from Citeh for no small fee.
Yes Barca are in a rebuild but that’s because they’ve bought absolute crap for 5 years. Mbappe and Haaland are both moving this summer and, I’ll bet my hat that one or both end up in Spain.

Nothing without ‘fans’
You will all remember the patronising radio and television commentators who kept on saying how great it is to have the ‘fans’ back after Covid. How important the ‘fans’ are to the game and how without the ‘fans’ the game was nothing and wasn’t anywhere near as much entertainment. They didn’t broadcast that it wasn’t worth as much in advertising revenue or TV rights, so I guess that must have been taken as read.
Now I hate the term ‘fans’ as it is often used in a way that resembles ‘the little people’ especially during that time, plus the fact that I am not a fanatic. At one stage I thought this was a topic for another day, but as I am writing, it seems right to shoe-horn it in here. All this love for the ‘fans’ has been forgotten with the scheduling of FA Cup tie between Tottenham and Brighton being moved to 8.00pm on a Saturday night. You can almost hear the TV executives going “the little people won’t mind, they will turn up anyway”.
8.00pm on a Saturday night makes it inconvenient enough for a Spurs supporter, so it must be a pain in the Arsenal for the Brighton followers. Don’t, whatever you do, talk about the magic of the FA Cup.
There is clearly no consideration for the people who pay to watch the sport in this timing and it is symptomatic of how little control, influence paying football supporters have when watching the team they follow. We are given no consideration at all. I have already been messed around by this week’s Spurs v Arsenal postponement (and I loved the 16 conclusions, pretty much spot on) which was the result of an agreement that could never have been checked by lawyers – if it was, they should be fired and replaced with a competent legal firm as if the halfwits who run football clubs can out manoeuvre you, you are in trouble. The NFL seem to have every angle and eventuality covered by watertight rules and regulations, so why not speak to them, Daniel Levy can arrange an introduction.
I won’t be going to the game and I know I am whistling into a vacuum when I say that the only effective way to stop the TV executives (who have been granted the power by the FA) from arranging these games at such ridiculous times is for people not to turn up. I know there will be other fans with legitimate and similar gripes, so this isn’t just a one eyed perspective.
As a Spurs fan, I will already have to put up with about 15 matches in 21 days at the end of the season, no doubt arranged for peculiar times that suit nobody but Sky and BT (who are by no means not the only villains here). Everyone will moan about how it isn’t fair on the players, but spare a thought for the everyday supporter, no-one else does.

Just a quick note to say Leeds were fined £200K having not broken any rules but having gone against the spirit of them.
I can’t wait for the punishments that are surely coming to all these teams that are also not breaking any rules but are cancelling games.

The Pep enigma and FSG anxiety
As I sit here in the hospital wondering if the nth fever is the rona this time; Rob’s mail got me thinking- doesn’t Pep get bored walking the league almost every season? Most of us get bored of a game on the PlayStation once we’ve mastered it, and professor Pep keeps blowing our collective minds; but the CL trophy still eludes him, that could be his final milestone before keeping the controller down and switching to another title (league or a national team, Pep for the three lions anyone? No?)
After admiring the Lex Luthor to our Supermen (Come on, we’re a properly developed team, apart from the GK and that Rolls Royce of a CB, or was one). Rob’s right again- This is our greatest side in the PL.
But the worry is about investing further so as to not go back to the days of sweating if out for 4th spot (If you consider last season as a blip) or the Europa league (shudders).
Bowen, Rapinha are the names being mentioned and would happily take them. There’s no guarantee stellar signings from the Bundesliga would work out (See, Werner and Sancho vs Bellingham and Haland).
But we need a prolific scorer or a magician in the middle to keep unlocking teams and collecting maximum points next season.(Can Stephen Strange pull the clock back on Philippe Coutinho please)

Just a quick retort to Dan’s ‘statistical’ analysis of trophies won and relative domestic dominance.
If Dan is assuming that City have won the league this season (fair enough) then whatever stretch of 10 years he wants to use, its 5 titles in 10 seasons. Or 6 in 11. But definitely not 6 in 10.
City have also definitely not “won 46% of all domestic trophies available to them over the last decade”. That would be 14 trophies out of 30, and to do that we need to win and include the League this season and start counting from the FA Cup win in 2011. And making a decade 12 years to ‘prove’ your point seems a bit of a stretch.
Over the last 10 seasons (that’s a Decade Dan) City have won 12 domestic trophies, which is 40%. Over 10 seasons (91-92 to 00-01) United won 11 domestic trophies, which is 37%.
So one more cup over 10 seasons is hardly statically significant I would say, so I’m not sure what your point is.
