Ex-Arsenal man tells Arteta to ‘cash in’ on Auba and picks new captain

Emmanuel Frimpong thinks Mikel Arteta should sell Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after he was stripped of the captaincy.

The Gunners confirmed this week that Aubameyang was no longer the club skipper after another disciplinary breach ahead of the weekend’s game against Southampton.

Arsenal hinted in their statement that there had been several incidents of the Gabon international breaking the rules.

One One Of Our Own per club: From Kane to Foden to TAA

The club said on their website: “Following his latest disciplinary breach last week, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will no longer be our club captain, and will not be considered for selection for Wednesday’s match against West Ham United.

“We expect all our players, particularly our captain, to work to the rules and standards we have all set and agreed. We are fully focused on tomorrow’s match.”

And former Gunners midfielder Frimpong insists it was the right call from the north London club to take the armband away from Aubameyang.

Frimpong told The Sun: “I feel like in any profession there must be a professional attitude. And we all know Aubameyang has had one or two problems with coming late so I feel it was the right call.

“He’s the captain and there has to be an example so the younger players in the squad can follow.”

Frimpong added: “I think it would be good for Arsenal to cash in. Look at his age, he’s getting older, and we need a new striker that we can have for the next five years.

“He’s a great player but this is the best time to cash in. It will be difficult though, as he’s on very good wages. It’s not going to be easy to get him out.”

Alexandre Lacazette captained the side in the win over West Ham on Wednesday and is one of the contenders to land the role on a permanent basis.

On the next captain, Frimpong continued: “I would like [Kieran] Tierney to be the captain. I also really like Ben White. I think Ben White can become a future captain for Arsenal.

“Most likely it’s going to be [Granit] Xhaka again which I’m not sure about as we’ve been there, done that. We need someone fresh. I would personally give it to Tierney for now.”

Frimpong wants Arsenal to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland but would settle for Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic.

The former Ghana international said: “I like the striker from Fiorentina, Dusan Vlahovic. I think he’s a very good player and he’d be my second signing if we couldn’t get Haaland.”
