Ex-player backs Rangnick to help Man Utd become ‘title contenders’

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre has backed Ralf Rangnick to succeed at the club as he can help them become “title contenders”.

The German has been confirmed as Man Utd’s new interim boss and on Thursday he was granted his work permit.

Rangnick is a respected coach and he has previously had spells in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig and Schalke.

Man United v Arsenal: The great rivalry is relevant once more

The Red Devils are currently tenth in the Premier League. They have only won one of their last eight games in the league.

They have a game in hand over their rivals but they are six points adrift of the Champions League places. They are also 15 points short of league leaders Chelsea.

Silvestre has told the Sun that Rangnick is a “good appointment” for United:

“Rangnick is good news. We know what he wants from his players, he has a plan and knows how to execute it. It’s a good appointment, I’m pleased with it,” Silvestre said

“It is smart because it gives both sides time to see if there is a match – from the club’s management and Ralf’s perspective.

“There is a mid-term plan and it could be the one that takes United to being title contenders. Not this season but his mission is to finish in the Champions League which is hard enough.

“You have to be sensitive and consider the gap in quality and performances.

“There is enough quality in the squad to finish in the top four – that is where they should finish.”

Elsewhere, Thierry Henry has suggested that he wants Arsenal to beat the top teams.

These comments came before the Gunners face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Henry said: “It showed we can beat Newcastle at home. We can beat Burnley, we can beat Aston Villa before Steven Gerrard arrived. We can beat Leicester with 27% possession.

“I think personally winning against those teams – and I’m not having a go – but I expect it from Arsenal when they play one game a week.

“Now the improvement is can you beat the teams at the top? That’s the improvement I want to see and am waiting to see tomorrow at Old Trafford.

“Every time they play a team they should lose against they not only lose but they get smashed. The improvement I want to see is can they get top-four?

“I’m an Arsenal fan and I think Mikel Arteta is doing well, but I want to see that improvement.

“Manchester United are not in the top-four but it can be a statement to go there and win and win well.

“We’re talking about Arsenal. I’m not over the moon by a Newcastle win, I want to see them win at Old Trafford.”
