Examining 20 of the latest Championship transfers and rumours

Plenty has happened since our last transfer round-up and so we’re back to examine all of the recent done deals and transfer rumours currently going around in the Championship.

Done deals:

Taylor Harwood-Bellis (Loan) and Phil Jagielka – Stoke
In the absence of Harry Souttar for the rest of the season, the recall of Leo Ostigard to Brighton and the sale of Danny Batth, Stoke have wasted no time in strengthening their back line.

Harwood-Bellis joins on loan from Manchester City for the season and they have picked up Phil Jagielka on a free transfer after his contract at Derby expired. Stoke have struggled to build the ball out from the back without Souttar and so it’s hoped that these new additions will be able to re-establish the philosophy.

Lewis Baker – Stoke
Lewis Baker is no stranger to the Championship with the midfielder previously having loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough, Leeds and Reading. After spending his entire senior career as a Chelsea player out on loan, he has now completed a free transfer to Stoke.

Stoke had been keen to add to their midfield options with Nick Powell and Romaine Sawyers both out injured.

Graeme Shinnie – Wigan
As we thought would be the case, Derby’s squad has already started to be picked apart with the Scottish midfielder making his way to Wigan for a minimal fee.

Shinnie’s presence in the middle will be missed for Derby, although a returning Krystian Bielik could fill the void for the rest of the season.

Onel Hernandez – Birmingham (Loan)
The Norwich winger spent the first half of the season on loan at Middlesbrough, where he made 17 appearances.

Hernandez is best utilised on the left-hand side where he is able to cut inside and get a shot away. His best season at this level came with Norwich in 2018/19 where he produced 17 goal contributions and helped the Canaries to promotion.

Dilan Markanday – Blackburn
The 20-year-old Spurs winger is the latest example of Blackburn shopping in the Premier League youngsters’ market, but this time they’ve landed Markanday on a permanent deal until 2025.

Markanday has an excellent record in the Premier League 2 and he looks like he could be a perfect fit into Blackburn’s 4-3-3 system.

Jake Bidwell – Coventry
With Ian Maatsen recently tweaking his hamstring, it’s no surprise that Coventry were in the market for another left wing-back.

Bidwell brings with him a wealth of Championship experience and Coventry were able to fend off other Championship teams to get this deal over the line.

Cyrus Christie – Swansea (Loan)
Cyrus Christie has joined Swansea for the rest of the season from Fulham and he certainly has big boots to fill, as he has been brought in to replace the popular Ethan Laird.

The right-sided defender played 44 matches for Nottingham Forest last season, but had only featured in one league match for Fulham in this campaign.

Steven Benda – Peterborough (Loan)
After David Cornell shipped four goals against Coventry at the weekend, you’d think that new goalkeeper Steven Benda will get his chance sooner rather than later.

The German goalkeeper featured in five games for Swansea at the start of the season and kept two clean sheets in that time. Peterborough currently have the worst defensive record in the league so Benda will certainly be kept on his toes when he’s given a chance.

Welcome Steven to the posh. This lad took a pay cut & agent a pay cut on future agent fees to come to us & make wages work within our budget to come. Love seeing that kind of commitment from young footballers . https://t.co/FkZWuUY7w5

Andrew Fisher – Swansea
The MK Dons goalkeeper had been a long-term target for Russell Martin and so this signing came as no surprise this week.

Ben Hamer has been Swansea’s number one up until this point of the season, but Fisher brings with him the ability to play out from the back and an already established idea of Martin’s philosophy.

Ethan Robson – Recalled by Blackpool
After Ryan Wintle was recalled by Cardiff, Blackpool were left looking light in midfield and so they have decided to recall Ethan Robson from his loan at MK Dons.

MK Dons had hoped to land Robson on a permanent basis, but with Blackpool short of midfield options it now looks like he’ll get his chance at Bloomfield Road.

Transfer rumours:

Jamie Paterson – Leaving Swansea?
Jamie Paterson was having a cracking season for Swansea, with the midfielder chipping in with eight goals and four assists. He signed for the Welsh club in the summer on a one-year-deal with the option of an extra year, although Paterson is now said to be unhappy with the terms of the extension.

The 30-year-old missed Swansea’s game against Huddersfield at the weekend and now his future at the club is up in the air.

Josh Bowler – Nottingham Forest
Forest have already had one bid turned down for the Blackpool winger, but they still haven’t given up on getting a deal done this summer as another bid is expected to go in.

Blackpool will be especially keen to keep hold of Bowler after an injury to fellow winger Keshi Anderson is expected to keep him out for some time.

Christian Eriksen – Fulham
Fulham could further strengthen their already stacked squad with the addition of Christian Eriksen, although it looks more than likely that the Danish midfielder will end up in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old is looking to restart his career in England and the likes of Brentford, Crystal Place and Leicester have also been linked.

Jordan Story – Sheffield Wednesday (Loan)
The 24-year-old defender only recently signed a new contract at Deepdale, although he is yet to feature under new manager Ryan Lowe and a loan move to League One could be on the cards.

Bambo Diaby – Preston
Preston might be looking to ship Storey out on loan so that they can bring in Bambo Diaby, who has been training with North End recently.

The ex-Barnsley defender had been serving a two-year doping ban which has recently expired, meaning he is now free to sign for a new club after two years out of the game.

Jay Fulton – Barnsley & Blackpool (Loan)
Jay Fulton has only featured in four Championship matches this season and so a loan move could well be on the cards for the Scottish midfielder.

Blackpool and Barnsley have both been linked with the Swansea midfielder who was a key component of Swansea’s midfield under previous manager Steve Cooper. The Seasiders have also been linked with a move for Oxford’s Cameron Brannagan.

Alfie Mawson – Birmingham
Birmingham have already added Teden Mengi into their backline for the season and he could be joined by Fulham’s Alfie Mawson.

Mawson has only started one Championship game for Fulham this season and has just six months left on his deal, although he was on the bench for Fulham’s 6-2 win over Birmingham in midweek. Fulham manager Marco Silva has also said he is keen to keep Mawson around for the rest of the season.

Matt Smith – Salford
Matt Smith is nearing the exit door at Millwall as a move to Salford seems to be on the cards. The target man has often been looked at as the ‘plan B’ option towards the end of a game – with 15 of his 21 appearances this season coming off the bench.

Smith has won 6.2 aerial duels per 90 this season, which has him as the fourth best aerial threat in the league. His departure, alongside Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, would indicate that Millwall have someone in mind to replace him.

Djed Spence – Arsenal
Several Premier League clubs have reportedly been looking at Djed Spenc,e who is having a terrific season at Nottingham Forest, on loan from Middlesbrough.

The 21-year-old put himself in the shop window after a starring performance in Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal. Leeds have also been mentioned as a possible destination for the defender.
