Guardiola taking ‘pleasure’ in Man City success after ‘deserved’ win

Pep Guardiola suggested that he takes more “pleasure” in winning things at Man City than he did with other clubs after their “deserved” victory over Club Brugge.

Guardiola‘s men took the lead in the early stages at the Etihad. Joao Cancelo hit the post but they were able to keep the move alive. This allowed Phil Foden to score from close range following a Cancelo cross.

The hosts were not ahead for long, though. An attempted clearance from Bernardo Silva was unluckily deflected into his own net off John Stones.

Each side exchanged chances early on in the second half before City retook the lead. Cancelo was at the forefront again as his cross this time was headed home by Riyad Mahrez.

Sterling tapped in to make it three before Gabriel Jesus netted before the end. This 4-1 win moves City to the top of Group A as PSG dropped points against RB Leipzig.

As reported by BBC Sport, Guardiola said that his side were “really good” in the second half versus Brugge:

“Fully deserved. In the first few minutes, we scored a goal but after conceding we dropped a little bit,” Guardiola said.

“The second half was really good. A good game, good victory. We need one point to go through, three points to win the group.”

On Leipzig helping them out with a late goal against PSG: “We help each other. What we’ve done these years… when you’re at Manchester City, you realise nobody will help you. Everything to do, we’ve done it. When you’re in high ranking and big clubs, I understand maybe. Here no. When we win, we do it.

“All the titles I won before were because I was at big clubs. Absolutely, the pleasure is higher [in winning things with City]. The fight to win the hierarchy in the Premier League is good.

“Every game is tough. They changed the shape we played in Belgium.

“We played really good football. I liked how we played.”

Aymeric Laporte said after the win that Brugge gave City “a lot of difficulties”:

“It was tough. We’re very happy with the result.

“It’s always difficult in the Champions League. Club Bruges are a good team. They gave us a lot of difficulties.

“I’m very happy to play alongside John [Stones]. We’ve known each other a long time and we’re happy to play together. There isn’t many times we play in the same game.

“I’m happy today for the win.”
