‘He must give us more’ – Man Utd man Martial sent warning by Sevilla boss

Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui has warned Man Utd attacker Anthony Martial that he “must give them much more” following his disappointing debut over the weekend.

The Frenchman made the move to Sevilla during the January transfer window. He was linked with Barcelona and Newcastle before this loan came to fruition.

During the first half of the 2021/22 campaign, Martial only started four games for Man Utd across all competitions.

Martial made his debut for Sevilla on Saturday in La Liga against Osasuna. He was brought off in the 77th minute as the Spanish rivals drew 0-0.

Sevilla are now six points adrift of league leaders Real Madrid, who beat Granada 1-0 on Sunday.

Lopetegui has encouraged Martial to “adapt” so he can thrive for Sevilla:

“Of course, Martial must give us much more. He needs to adapt and figure out the dynamics of the team,” Lopetegui said (via 90min).

“Obviously, he hasn’t played a lot this year, but I’m confident he will figure out how we play soon.”

Speaking last month, Simon Jordan said he believed that Anthony Martial is responsible for his failed Man Utd career:

“If you look at young players. Wayne Rooney went into Man United as a teenager, [Cristiano Ronaldo] went there, Jude Bellingham’s gone to Dortmund as a teenager,” Jordan said.

“It depends on the player and how they adapt. The ownership of the outcome is determined by the player and is created by him.

“If you’ve been there a couple years, or eighteen months like Wilfried Zaha went there, clearly it wasn’t right for him to go Man United at the time.

“You can contribute that to the player and the step up, he [Martial] has been given six-and-half years!

“Six-and-half-years to get his act together. Ultimately he’s not really made his mark.

“It’s all been about what he can do rather than what he has done. You have to lay the blame the player – the same way with Memphis Depay when he came.

“There are also many examples of younger players who go to clubs and are successful.

“To build something of substance and to overcome adversity, if it’s always a one-way transaction then when a moment of adversity comes your way, you will fail.”
