‘I’ve gone with my heart’ – Ferdinand makes Man Utd top four prediction

Rio Ferdinand has backed Manchester United to finish in the top four as the “doom and gloom” attitude around the club is not necessary.

A run of poor results coincided with Ole Gunnar Solskajer losing his job towards the end of November.

Man Utd have replaced him with Ralf Rangnick. The former Schalke and RB Leipzig boss is set to be their interim manager until the summer.

Liverpool, Man Utd have blown bigger New Year leads than City

Rangnick has won three of his four games in charge in the Premier League. They dropped points against Newcastle earlier this week as they were fortunate to draw 1-1.

Man Utd are back in action on Monday evening as they face Wolves at Old Trafford.

If United win, they will move to within just two points of fourth-placed Arsenal. They also have a further game in hand over their rivals.

As quoted by The Metro, Ferdinand has backed Man Utd to finish ahead of Arsenal to earn a Champions League place:

“I’ve gone with my heart,” Ferdinand admitted. “Man United in the last four games, maybe their performances can be questioned at times but it’s a new person in charge, trying to implement his tactics etc.

“He hasn’t had time on the training pitch and I think that’ll improve and there’s scope to improve there, I think there will be.

“As much as there’s a bit of doom and gloom around the club in terms of performance, they’ve won three of their last four games and drawn the other.

“I think the run of games they’ve got will put them in a good place.”

Ferdinand went onto suggest that he cannot see anyone matching Man City in the title race:

“I think Liverpool would be my tip to rival Man City,” he added. But I know it could only be two games they miss when [Mohamed] Salah and [Sadio] Mane go to the African Cup of Nations, but if they don’t win those two games then I think City have won it.

“Ten wins on the bounce [for Man City], 30-plus goals and six conceded [in the last 10 games], that’s form that I don’t think anyone else is capable of achieving, so they’re my favourites.”
