Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas has hailed Thiago Alcantara for adding a “different dimension” to Liverpool this season.
The Spain international joined the Reds in September 2020 and made 30 appearances in all competitions during his first season at Anfield.
However, the Liverpool fans didn’t see the best of the 30-year-old as he suffered with injuries while getting used to the pace of the Premier League.
But he has showed some of his best form this term and has started to become a regular starter now he is fit and firing.
“He’s added a different dimension to this Liverpool team. They’ve had passers in there before, but not like this. They’ve usually always depended much more on Trent Alexander-Arnold or Virgil van Dijk at the back,” Jenas said on BT Sport.
“They can do it from the centre of the pitch with this guy now.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold – who scored a wonderful third goal for the Reds in a 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Thursday – is another player who has shone for Liverpool this term and Jenas also reserved some special praise for the England international.
“He just hit it so pure and Trent’s a guy who works on the details,” Jenas added.
“I know we say we see it all the time but his level of consistency is just so high that yeah we’ve seen him score spectacular goals.
“But like he said in his interview he’s tried to strike a few where he’s pulled it. That was perfection and that’s as pure as you can get as a striker.”
“They’re going to go through mercenaries turning up and taking money.”
“It will happen, because they are desperate right now.”

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole was similarly impressed with Alexander-Arnold’s goal against Newcastle, he added: “That was a special goal from a special player and we do see it regularly but to pick up the ball from this distance, just out of his feet that is just as clean as you like.
“If you look at Mike Dean, I don’t know the rulings but he’s certainly affected the goalkeeper’s vision but in saying that it’s as clean as you can hit a football. It was crisp, it was top bins.”
