Jota praises ‘unbelievable’ teammate after ‘very, very tough’ win

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has praised his ‘unbelievable’ teammate Mohamed Salah after the Reds’ 3-1 win over Newcastle on Thursday evening.

Jurgen Klopp’s side found them 1-0 down early after Jonjo Shelvey’s superb strike against his former club.

But goals from Jota, Salah and and a fantastic effort from Trent Alexander-Arnold gave Liverpool the win and moved them back to within a point of Manchester City at the top of the table.

Portuguese forward Jota has admitted it was a tough fight to secure the win but praised his team’s mentality.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the win, Jota said: “Today even more because we were 1-0 down, so I think the mentality of the team was great. And this is what we need for the future.

“[It was] very, very tough. They are fighting for their lives and we knew that. Unfortunately for us, they scored with the first shot, that was a really bad moment for us.

“But I’m happy we could bounce back straight away. We scored three and we could have scored more, but the most important thing is the three points.”

Egyptian forward Salah scored again, meaning he now has 15 goals in the Premier League so far this season, six more than Jota and Leicester talisman Jamie Vardy who sit second in the rankings.

He also has nine assists, again leading the way in terms of Premier League numbers and Jota has praised his teammates form.

“It’s unbelievable, he’s getting at least one goal a game or an assist. It will be important for us and I hope he can continue like that because it would be really good for us.”

Alexander-Arnold’s screamer put the icing on the cake for Klopp’s side and whilst Jota admitted it was an incredible effort, he wasn’t too surprised.

“What a strike! We know his ability, his technique so we always can expect these kinds of things from him. I was going for the rebound in case it happened but it’s in the top corner – you don’t save those.”

Liverpool take on Tottenham on Sunday in one of just five Premier League games that hasn’t yet been called off due to Covid related reasons.
