Kane has to leave ‘cringey’ Spurs to break record, says Merson

Paul Merson has urged Harry Kane to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Manchester City, claiming it is the only way for him to break Alan Shearer’s record of 260 Premier League goals.

Kane was heavily linked with the reigning champions in the summer but City were priced out of the move and instead opted to sign Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.

City haven’t looked back and are running away with their sixth league title after a 12-game winning streak, while Spurs have floundered and have already switched managers.

16 Conclusions: Manchester City 1-0 Chelsea

Kane, who has scored just four times in the league this season, has been encouraged by Merson to do all he can to force a move, with the former Arsenal man claiming he will never surpass Shearer’s goal tally if he stays put.

In his column for the Daily Star, Merson wrote: “Over the two legs in the cup, it was cringey how far Spurs were behind Chelsea.

“I really thought Antonio Conte would win a trophy there eventually. But I’m not so sure now. He needs about five players.

“You’re only as good as the people around you, and if you look at Spurs right now, who’s setting up chances for Harry Kane?

“That midfield aren’t getting 15 assists each in a season are they? They’d be lucky to get 15 between them! Kane can’t do it all on his own.

“That’s where I think he gets frustrated. He’s still coming short to get on the ball. But if he went to City he’d score a lorryload of goals.

“He’s not beating Shearer’s record of 260 Premier League goals with the service he gets at Tottenham. Not with VAR – because every goal is in danger of being cancelled out.”

He continued: “Kane is 90 behind Shearer’s all-time mark. And there’s no point coming second or third. It’s all about Shearer’s record.

“But Harry Kane isn’t picking the ball up on the halfway line, beating three players, and scoring. So he needs creative players around him. Simple as that.

“He’s 28 now. How many goals is he realistically going to score in that Tottenham team for the next five years? He’s got no chance.

“It would be absolutely phenomenal if he could beat that record. But I think it’s a big ask unless he’s at City, where they can win games 7-0.”
