Keane criticises ‘robot’ Maguire, tells him to do his ‘own job’

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has launched scathing rant on current United skipper Harry Maguire after his apology for the clubs defeat last weekend to Liverpool.

United were thumped 5-0 by their biggest rivals as Jurgen Klopp’s side ran riot with Mohamed Salah getting a hat-trick.

Maguire has apologised to the fans a number of time since the humiliating defeat, as have many of his teammates. However, Keane has revealed he is sick of the players talking.

“The mood is that we are disappointed and hurt. We are footballers who play at the highest level. We know what the requirements are in this club. We have a lot of experience, many leaders and many people who say what they mean,” said the England international said earlier this week.

“You see small pieces here and there, but you try to avoid reading things. When you have had an ugly defeat against your rival, Liverpool, I do not think the main focus is to read reports where you see these rumours.

“I know from my experience in this club that when you lose matches, there are always rumours about what happens in the dressing room, but most of it is not true. We have a strong and unified dressing room. We stand together on this and move forward together.”

The defender has struggled in recent weeks, making mistakes against his former club Leicester before crumbling, like many of his teammate, against Liverpool.

Speaking on Sky Sports before United took on Tottenham, Keane said: “They need to show some character. United have so many talented players going forward, but there are huge question marks over the two in midfield.

“Maguire and Shaw last week were disgraceful, a disgrace to the club.

“Wan-Bissaka, I’m not even sure Palace would take him back now, he’s not good enough for United. No feel for the ball, his decision-making.

“I heard Maguire talking during the week, it was like a robot – ‘Apologies to the fans’ – there’s no emotion behind it!

“I’m fed up of the apologising, Maguire coming out and saying they need to come together as a group – No, you need to sort your game out if you’re going to be the leader of that group! Get the basics job and do your own job!”

Keane has never held back on his thought of the current crop of United players, famously launching criticising Maguire and goalkeeper David de Gea after their first half display against Spurs in the 2019-2020 season.
