Leeds fined £20,000 for failing to control their players vs Chelsea

Leeds United have been fined £20,000 for failing to control their players during their 3-2 defeat against Chelsea earlier this month.

Several of Leeds’ players surrounded Chris Kavanagh after he awarded Chelsea a penalty in stoppage time at Stamford Bridge.

Italian midfielder Jorginho scored the spot-kick to win the game for the hosts.

Further controversy then followed when a melee involving players of both sides broke out near the touchline after the final whistle.

Leeds pleaded guilty to an FA charge and accepted a standard punishment.

A statement from the FA read: “Leeds United FC has been fined £20,000 for a breach of FA Rule E20.1 that took place during the 93rd minute of its Premier League match against Chelsea FC on Saturday December 11, 2021.

“Leeds United FC admitted to failing to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion when they surrounded the match referee, and accepted the standard penalty.”

Speaking on Sunday, Gabriel Agbonlahor called for Leeds to replace Marcelo Bielsa:

“They’ve been so far out of the Premier League, so many years they’ve been in the Championship, they’ve finally got back in the Premier League, surely they want to stay there,” Agbonlahor said.

“For me, I would change Bielsa, the way they’re playing at the moment, it’s very stubborn coaching, you’re playing against big teams with world-class players and you’re trying to go toe-to-toe.

“You can’t do that in the Premier League, for me I would change it. Get someone in who can keep Leeds United up now.

“You look at the table, Burnley have got three games in hand on Leeds, five points behind them.

“They’re playing with fire, they’re playing with relegation and if they did go down, it might take them another 16 years to get back up.

“So, for me, I just don’t understand it, the atmosphere at the ground, the fans are cheering, you’re getting battered every week, it’s Sunday league scores.”
