Liverpool defender reveals his desire to leave in January

Nat Phillips has revealed that he is ready to leave Liverpool in the winter transfer window in the search for consistent playing time.

The 24-year-old was a prominent figure for Liverpool last season. He played 20 times across all competitions.

This came as he covered for Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, who all picked up injuries during the 2020/21 campaign.

Phillips has fallen down the pecking order this season, however. He started against AC Milan in their final Champions League group game but this was only his second appearance of the season.

He has recently been linked with a move to West Ham, who are in dire need of defensive reinforcements following long-term injuries to Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Phillips has revealed his desire to leave Liverpool next month if the Reds receive a suitable offer for him.

“The manager and I agree that the best thing for me is to play as many games as possible,” he said. “I think you saw last year I developed well.

“I’m going to see what comes along [in January] and go from there. I think at this moment in time it’s unlikely that I’ll be playing lots of games for Liverpool, so if an opportunity arises where I get the chance to do that somewhere else and it suits everyone then it’s certainly something I’d be interested in.

“I’ve had the exposure and experience in the Premier League and the Champions League. So maybe those situations where you’re new and nervy, I’ve gone through that phase.

“I don’t need to go through that process if I do go somewhere else. I’ll be ready straight away to get involved and play.”

Meanwhile, former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique believes Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak, who has an £80m release clause, would be “perfect” for the Reds.

The Sweden international has been linked with a move to Liverpool as well as several of their Premier League rivals of late.

“I love Isak from Real Sociedad, I think they should have signed him in the summer before he signed a new deal with Sociedad,” Enrique said.

“Isak is definitely perfect for Liverpool’s profile of signings, a young player, not spending 100’s of millions you’re going to spend £50-60m, definitely I would go for him.”
