Liverpool director is a ‘hot candidate’ for role at German side

Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards is “wanted” by Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig with his contract due to expire, according to reports.

Edwards has been with Liverpool for ten years. Before joining them, he had spells at Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur as Head of Performance Analysis.

He took up that role at Liverpool before he became their sporting director in 2016.

Edwards has been lauded over the last few years. He has overseen the signings of Mohamed Salah, Alisson and Virgil van Dijk.

It was reported in August that Edwards wants to leave Liverpool with him being in the final year of his contract.

German outlet SportBild (as cited by the Liverpool Echo) have reported that Edwards is “wanted” by RB Leipzig.

Markus Krosche left the club at the end of the 2020/21 season to join Frankfurt and Edwards is a “hot candidate” to replace him.

Elsewhere, Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been linked with a £60m move to Manchester United and Liverpool.

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has suggested that the England midfielder would suit Liverpool more than United:

“If he goes to Anfield he will still be remembered as a Leeds United hero. But if he goes to Old Trafford that all goes out the window,” Merson said.

“And a Leeds United player going to Manchester United? Wow. Better start well! That’s pressure.

“I think he plays every week for either club, personally. But I don’t think it will just be those two teams after him.

“With Phillips, I think he’d suit Liverpool more than United. And if they are paying big money for him I don’t see Jordan Henderson playing every week.

“I’m not saying that would be the end of Henderson. He’s a good pro. Never lets you down. But he’s not getting any younger.

“I think Phillips could learn from having him around. I think Phillips would become a much better player at Liverpool.

“At Leeds he will get burnt out. I think he’s virtually left on his own too much in midfield at Leeds and he has to do everything.

“It won’t be like that for him at Liverpool. But at United? Who knows? United’s midfield is a problem.”
