Man Utd legend Dwight Yorke has suggested that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield is better than the one Liverpool beat them with at Old Trafford this season.
James Milner, Naby Keita and Jordan Henderson lined up against Scott McTominay, Fred and Bruno Fernandes in late October as Jurgen Klopp’s men tore the Red Devils to shreds in a 5-0 demolition.
United’s 2-0 loss to Man City a fortnight later has seen them sink to sixth in the Premier League table with Solskjaer clinging onto his job.
Yorke still thinks Man Utd have a squad capable of winning the Premier League but they are not functioning as a team.
The former Man Utd striker told talkSPORT: “I think we have a squad of players capable of winning the Premier League. Are they playing like champions? No.
“I think you have to go back to three or four seasons to Leicester when they won the Premier League. You look at the players they had and we have a squad that is very much capable of winning the Premier League.
“When you have the likes of Sancho and Marcus Rashford not being able to get into the team, and you talk about us not being strong enough? I don’t buy that.
“We have a fantastic squad, we strengthened in defence, we have a fantastic goalkeeper, we’ve got attacking fullbacks.
“People talks about the midfield, but you can’t have a perfect team.
“I look at Liverpool’s team and, no disrespect, but they are playing with Jordan Henderson in midfield, Naby Keita and… I can’t even remember who played alongside them when they beat us.
“You would have fancied your chances against that midfield Liverpool played.
“These players are very good players, but when you look man-for-man at Man United, they should be manning up to do better.
“For some reason at the moment, they have failed at this moment in time. It’s no surprise we are under the cosh at the minute because the results haven’t been going [well]. That’s not just for Ole, but for any other manager.”
After being reminded that it was Milner who lined up alongside Henderson and Keita in a three, Yorke added: “It was Milner, yes.
“That’s obviously no disrespect to Milner and the other players, they are quality players, but you’d fancy playing against them.
“You’re never going to get a perfect 11, but people have to raise their game to win Premier League.
“We’ve got the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, World Cup winners in Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane, so it’s just crazy that we are where we are. It’s really heartbreaking at times to watch, it’s hard to take.
“The situation is not really great, I have to be honest about that. Ole and the players must know that, the fans know that, anyone that knows anything about football knows that.
“Where do we go from here? Do you trust the manager still to take us forward? The board have some tough decisions to make, but until then we, as ex-players and ambassadors, have got to support Ole all the way.”
