Merson makes prediction for Arsenal versus ‘tired’ West Ham

Paul Merson has made a prediction for Wednesday night’s game between Arsenal and West Ham United at the Emirates.

Arsenal host their London rivals West Ham United in the Premier League in midweek.

Mikel Arteta’s men go into this game two points and two places behind the Hammers.

Both teams have played 16 games and Arsenal will move above their rivals if they win on Wednesday.

Arsenal recovered from back to back defeats over the weekend as they beat Southampton 3-0.

West Ham meanwhile are not on a great run of form of late. They have only won two of their last seven games across all competitions.

David Moyes’ side dropped points against Burnley on Sunday as they drew 0-0. As quoted by Sportskeeda, Merson has predicted that Arsenal will win 2-1:

“Wow, what a game this could turn out to be! West Ham played really well against Burnley but they couldn’t score. If Arsenal win this one, they’ll go above West Ham in the Premier League standings and that’s rather unbelievable considering where the two sides were a few weeks ago.

“I think Arsenal will win this one, they’ll make their home advantage count. West Ham look a bit tired at times and tend to rely on a group of players too much, which has started to show a bit in recent weeks.

“As for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, I don’t think he will return to the team immediately. He was punished by Mikel Arteta and wasn’t part of the matchday squad for the Premier League encounter against Southampton, so I’ll be shocked if he was named in the starting XI for this one.”

Merson also thinks that Man Utd will get the better of Brentford if their game goes ahead on Tuesday:

“It was a great result for Brentford the other day when they got a much-needed win against Watford. Manchester United, on the other hand, were really poor against Norwich City and would’ve probably lost the game if they played against a better team.

“United need to perform much better than they did at Carrow Road to have a chance of winning this one and I’m sure they will. They have two wins from two in the Premier League under Ralf Rangnick and have a nice set of fixtures coming up, so most of their upcoming games are winnable.

“They have to make this run count in the race for a top-four finish, in my opinion, they are the favourites at this point in time. That said, it could change every week, as Spurs have a few games in hand and if Arsenal beat West Ham United, they’ll suddenly go above the Hammers.”
