After their victory over Aston Villa, David Moyes suggested that he is keen for his West Ham United side to avoid becoming a “flaky inconsistent team”.
The Hammers went in front in the seventh minute against Aston Villa. Ben Johnson cut in from the right flank and his left-footed strike found the far corner past Emiliano Martinez.
Dean Smith’s side hit back in the 34th minute. Emiliano Buendia advanced before he set up Ollie Watkins, who clinically finished off the move.
Villa and West Ham precisely where they should be on merit
Rice restored West Ham‘s lead just before half time. His strike from the edge of the box got the better of Martinez as the ‘keeper could not keep it out.
The Londoners were given a further boost just after the restart as Ezri Konsa was sent off. This came as he was the last man when he brought down Jarrod Bowen.
Pablo Fornals and Bowen got on the scoresheet late on as West Ham beat Villa 4-1.
As reported by BBC Sport, Moyes said after the game that he was “a little bit disappointed” with how his side played against Villa:
“It’s been a great week. But you know what happens in football. It can turn around and bite you,” Moyes said.
“We have another game on Thursday. I don’t want West Ham to become that flaky inconsistent team a lot of people remember them as.
“Getting four goals [pleased me most], the resilience we showed at different times of game and save Lukasz [Fabianski] at 2-1. It’s a good sign we can come here and be a little bit disappointed with the way we played and get a result.”
Rice also spoke after the game and he said that West Ham are “over the moon” at the moment:
“It’s a special group at the minute, a special environment. We wake up looking forward to training. Every game, we’ve been in it until the end. It’s a special place to play. We’re over the moon.
“I can definitely add [goals] to my game, I have four this season. It doesn’t get better with the feeling of scoring a goal. I really love playing away, you are in someone else’s stadium and get the away fans.
“We won 4-1 but we were so sloppy in the second half. We gave the ball away so much. The manager won’t be happy. There were times we could have countered and gave it away.
“We are joint third. The big question people asked before the season was whether we could do it again. We’ve found out we can. But still a lot more games to go. This is the level, the standard. We can’t drop if we want to be a big team.”
