Arsenal have signed New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner for an undisclosed fee, the MLS club have announced.
The American shot-stopper will join the Gunners at the end of the season, meaning he will stay with New England through the entirety of their Concacaf Champions League campaign.
The 27-year-old has been in New England since 2016 and has made over 100 appearances for the MLS club.
Turner has also made 16 appearances for the United States national team, starting in all six games they played at the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
A Revolution club statement read: “The New England Revolution have agreed to terms for goalkeeper Matt Turner to join Arsenal of the English Premier League in a summer transfer for an undisclosed fee pending completion of a medical.
“Turner, the 2021 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, is expected to join Arsenal in late June 2022, allowing the United States international to remain with New England through the entirety of the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League campaign and nearly half of the 2022 MLS regular season. Further information will be shared when the transfer is completed.”
Turner will play second-fiddle to Gunners ‘keeper Aaron Ramsdale, with Bernd Leno highly likely to leave the club in the summer.
Newcastle United have been heavily linked with the German shot-stopper and reportedly “held conversations” with Arsenal over signing him on loan.
Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta is refusing to talk up Arsenal’s chances of finishing in the top four after their victory at Wolves.
Gabriel scored to secure a 1-0 win that moved the Gunners a point behind fourth-placed West Ham – and they have two games in hand.
The Gunners boss said: “You don’t know how many points we’re going to need to get to the objectives but, as well, we need to look at ourselves and focus on what we’re doing and go game by game because we can’t look too far ahead.
“They are three big points, especially coming here with the way that they’ve been playing. I think they were pretty close to us as well, and to come here and in the way that we’ve done it, I think it shows and I think it’s a good summary of who we are.”
