Newcastle 1-0 Aston Villa: Trippier shows off free-kick prowess again

Newcastle United boosted their chances of Premier League survival with a narrow 1-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Magpies took a 35th-minute lead against Aston Villa when, after a VAR check had ruled Calum Chambers’ challenge on Joe Willock had taken place outside the area, referee Craig Pawson changed his penalty decision to a free-kick.

Kieran Trippier smashed his shot through the defensive wall and a slight deflection took the ball past Emi Martinez and into the net for his second goal in six days.

Chris Wood deflected a John McGinn shot just wide in first-half stoppage time, but Trippier’s effort was all that separated Newcastle and Aston Villa at the break.

Villa thought they were level with 61 minutes gone when Ollie Watkins headed home at the far post, but the strike was ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR check.
