Newcastle have hired former Celtic and Reading director of football Nick Hammond as a transfer consultant on a short-term deal.
The 36-year-old will help oversee the January transfer window at St James’ Park as the Magpies aim to avoid relegation this season.
Hammond will work alongside head coach Eddie Howe. The pair previously worked together at Burnley.

Hammond’s arrival follows Mark Leyland’s from Liverpool, who joined as first-team coach analyst earlier this week.
Newcastle remain in the bottom three following their 3-1 defeat to Leyland’s former employers on Thursday evening.
Howe felt referee Mike Dean’s decision not to stop play for an apparent head injury before Liverpool’s equaliser was the pivotal moment in the game.
“The turning point of the game is an obvious one, I can’t understand how Mike’s not stopped the game,” Howe said.
“Isaac clearly holds his head immediately lying in our six-yard box with another player and that leads to the goal.
“At the time it was clear to me the game had to be stopped and it wasn’t. That is the key moment in the match.
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The priority always has to be the safety of the player, we talk a lot at the moment about head injuries and I felt that was a wrong decision and we were harshly treated today.
“He was treated and taken off to the side of the pitch and still didn’t look 100 per cent himself.
“It follows a similar pattern where the rub of the green has gone against us. You play at Anfield and have the lead and then suddenly they get the goal and the crowd are up.”
Ramsey has been linked with numerous clubs with his future in Turin cast in doubt. He will likely be able to leave for free in January if a suitor is willing to meet his wage demands.
“He would be a great signing for them,” Wilshere said on talkSPORT. “It’s a massive club, Newcastle.”
