Newcastle in talks ‘behind the scenes’ for Germany defender

Newcastle United have ‘been in talks’ with the representatives of Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule, according to reports.

The Germany international has been linked with a move to Tyneside for a while now, with rumours circulating about a move as soon as their Saudi-led takeover was complete last month.

New manager Eddie Howe will need to dip into the transfer kitty in the January window with the Magpies struggling for form this term.

Ranking the current mood at the 20 Premier League clubs

The Geordies are currently 19th in the Premier League and are the only top flight side without a win this season.

In their 11 league matches so far they have failed to keep a single clean sheet, so defensive reinforcements seem necessary.

And a potential new signing is Germany international Sule, with Newcastle holding talks with the German’s representatives, according to Liam Kennedy.

“It’s the exact fit of a type of player Newcastle are looking for in January. I’m not going to say it will happen, but there did seem some positivity around it [with] people I’ve spoken to, so we’ll have to wait and see on that one. But it’s true, there’s definitely been talks between representatives behind the scenes,” Kennedy said on NUFC Matters.

The 26-year-old defender has made 17 appearances this term for Bayern, and often fills in at right-back for Julian Nagelsmann.

Germany and Bayern Munich central defender Niklas Sule very much on #NUFC's radar.

Fits the bill re the type of player they're looking to recruit – and his contract situation helps.

Meanwhile, Jack Wilshere has claimed that Real Madrid star Eden Hazard “would love” to play for Newcastle boss Howe.

The Belgian spent seven years at Chelsea between 2012 and 2019 and is linked with a move back to the Premier League, with the Magpies reportedly interested.

Wilshere played under Howe at Bournemouth and has told talkSPORT that Hazard would love playing for Newcastle’s new boss.

“He was great with me [at Bournemouth], because it was tough for me there because I was coming from a big club,” he said.

Eden Hazard is another level, but I think Eden would love playing for a manager like Eddie Howe [at Newcastle]. He’s the type of manager you want to play for.

“I worked with him at a club that I see now are quite similar to Newcastle – not in terms of the size of the club, but in terms of the players.”
