Newcastle ‘plot ambitious swoop’ for 35-year-old PSG man

Newcastle are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas, according to reports.

The Costa Rica international has been in the French capital since 2019 following a successful stint at Real Madrid.

He won three Champions League titles with Los Blancos and has represented his country at two World Cups.

Navas is currently competing with Gianluigi Donnarumma for the No. 1 shirt at PSG after the Italy shot-stopper joined on a free transfer last summer.

He is expected to stay in Paris until the end of the season with the club ‘closing the door’ on a January exit, according to RMC Sport (via the Express).

However, the report claims that Newcastle have ‘made contact’ with PSG to inform them of their interest in the goalkeeper.

The Magpies have been linked with numerous players in recent weeks due to their position in the Premier League as well as their wealth.

They have already completed the signings of Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid and Chris Wood from Burnley.

Finding a new goalkeeper is not exactly a pressing issue for Eddie Howe, who has Martin Dubravka, Freddie Woodman and Karl Darlow available to him.

It is unclear if the Geordies will pursue Navas this month or wait until the summer transfer window.

Elsewhere, Micah Richards thinks Man Utd midfielder Bruno Fernandes is approaching top form after his performance in a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa on Saturday.

The 27-year-old scored a brace for the Red Devils as they took a two-goal lead at Villa Park before late goals from Jacob Ramsey and new signing Philippe Coutinho snatched a point for Steven Gerrard’s side.

Fernandes has scored seven goals and provided eight assists from 26 appearances in all competitions this season for Man Utd.

“It was the Bruno Fernandes of last season. He really was back to somewhere near his best,” Richards said on BBC’s Match of the Day.

“He just dictated the game. He gets a bit lucky with the first goal but if you don’t shoot you don’t score.

“I just liked the way he dictated the game. He ticked things over and was always looking forward and organising the team.

“With all the talk of [Cristiano] Ronaldo, I really think Fernandes stepped up today and was the main man for United.”
